About Parklands

Parklands is a suburb of Nairobi, divided into numbered avenues and has become synonymous with the Asian community.

The name arises from the proximity of the area to City Park. Parklands is located approximately 5 kilometres by road, north-northwest of the central business district of Nairobi.

Social/Cultural

It is a neighbourhood that has become synonymous with the Asian community, mainly the upper and middle class.

Schools

Several primary and secondary Schools are found in Parklands both
government and private.

Educational institutions like Mount Kenya University, both Kenyatta University the University of Nairobi’s Law campuses, and the Aga Khan University are also found in this area.

Neighbourhood

The Kenya Hockey Union, the Parklands Sports Club and the Nairobi Gymkhana are some of the notable sports facilities within Parklands area.

History of Parklands

During Kenya's colonial days, the British demarcated the area as a residential neighbourhood for civil servants. During the 1940s and 1950s Parklands was one of the most congested suburban areas of the Nairobi metropolitan area. In the second decade of the 2000s Parklands is a
mixed commercial/residential neighbourhood.

Most of the architecture in Parklands is of the 1930s and 1940s Art Deco type that many Kenyans mistakenly refer to as ‘Asian type’ houses. However, apartments with modern architecture have also been put up.
